The Basics of Roullete
A casino game that is based on chance, Roullete (from the French meaning little wheel) involves betting on the outcome of a spinning roulette wheel. Players place bets on a single number, groups of numbers, the color red or black, whether the bet is odd or even and many other options. There are a number of variations to the game that differ in the payouts and house edge, so players should review these before laying their chips down.
The roulette wheel consists of a solid wooden disk, slightly convex in shape. Around its rim are metal separators, called frets by roulette croupiers, with 37 compartments, or pockets, painted alternately in red and black. The number one is a separate, numbered compartment and the rest of the numbers are grouped into three sets of twelve, called “Dozens.” There is also an additional green compartment numbered 0 on European wheels. The American wheel has a second extra green compartment numbered 00, which increases the house’s advantage over the European version of the game.
Prior to spinning the wheel, players lay their chips on a special roulette table mat, which marks off sections of the table where various bets may be made. The croupier then spins the wheel and rolls a small ball into it until it comes to rest in one of the compartments. Winning bets are then paid out based on the payout table. Losing bets are removed from the table and the croupier may change the bet amounts on the next spin.
Roulette rules are simple to learn, and the odds of winning are much higher than other casino games. However, many players still lose because they try to ‘game the system’ by watching the previous wheel results and betting accordingly. It is important to remember that probability states that the chances of a particular number appearing are random and do not depend on the fact that it hasn’t appeared in the previous spin.
The best way to play Roulette is to understand the rules of the game and what each bet type has to offer. The simplest bet is to place a straight-up bet on an individual number. This bet requires a player to place all of their chips on the number they are hoping will appear. Another popular bet is the split bet, which places chips on two different numbers. A corner bet is a bet that a specific grouping of four numbers will be the winning combination. This bet pays out 392 chips if it is successful. The only other way to win a large sum of money in Roulette is to place a bet on the color red, which offers the highest payout of any bet. The other big winners are the even-money bets, which have a lower house edge but are not as exciting to play. It is important to review the bet types before placing any bets.
