What Is Baccarat?
Baccarat is a casino card game that has become associated with wealth, elegance and high rollers. It’s not only a game of chance, but with proper management it can also be a profitable and exciting game for players of all sizes and bankrolls.
The goal of baccarat is to bet on which hand, the Player or Banker, will have a total value closest to nine. Both hands are dealt two cards and additional cards may be drawn based on specific rules. Tens and face cards count as zero, while aces and sevens have their normal values. If the first two cards total more than nine, the first digit is dropped to reveal the true value of the hand.
When the Banker’s hand has a total of 8 or 9, it is known as a ‘natural’ and wins with a payout of 9 to 1. A winning Player hand pays out at 9.5 times the stake, while a winning Tie pays eight to one.
A 5% commission is charged on winning Banker bets. This is to help offset the cost of running a live baccarat table, which requires special tables, dealers and a croupier. In addition, the croupier must pay for a special shoe with six decks of cards shuffled together. This allows the croupier to keep the table moving while paying out winners and collecting bets.
The earliest version of the game is believed to have originated in Italy, where it was popular among royalty and aristocrats. Later, it moved to France, where it became a favorite of King Charles VIII and the French aristocracy. It’s not known who exactly invented the game, but many credit the famous gambler, Antoine de Falguiere, with its creation.
In the US, baccarat has gained popularity in recent years due to its association with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. The 2013 movie, ‘The Great Gatsby’ featured the game as one of the main entertainment events at the lavish parties thrown by Jay Gatsby and his wealthy entourage. The game’s popularity has exploded in the Asian market and it is now the preferred casino game of many Asian high rollers.
A number of superstitions are associated with the game. The most prominent is the belief that the game should not be played by women, although this is not a universal rule. The game is also often played at a private table and with large bets, which can make the game intimidating for many casino goers.
There are several baccarat betting systems that can help players maximize their profits and minimize their losses. For example, the Labouchere system involves creating a betting sequence that is adjusted after each loss to ensure that the next win will cover all previous losses and provide a profit equal to the initial bet amount.
Another strategy is card counting, which can be used in combination with other strategies to reduce the house edge and increase a player’s chances of winning. While this is a complicated technique, it has proven successful for some players who have used it to win thousands of dollars in the past year alone.
